Sunday Socks Pattern

So I did in fact finish my Sunday Socks on Sunday. They are smooth, easy, and graceful, and are perfect for stripey yarns. Again, these are Farmhouse Yarns Fannie's Fingering, in Indian Corn.

(If you think those books were not chosen with extreme care, you're crazy. Anyone who can correctly identify all of them rules.)

I wrote this pattern for magic loop, but it's easily transferable.

Size: Narrow (Medium, Wide). Shown in Narrow.

Materials: 375-400 yards stripey sock yarn.
Size 1 needles.
Cable needle.
Tapestry needle.

Gauge: 8 sts X 12 rows = 1 inch.

Pattern:

Figure 8 cast on 10 sts.

*K1, M1R, k to last st on needle, M1L, k1. Repeat from * around.
K all sts

Repeat these two rounds until 62 (66, 70) stitches are on needles.

K three rows.
C2F, K 23 (25, 27) sts, C2B. K remaining sts around.

Repeat these four rounds until sock measures 2 inches less than length of foot, ending with R4.

Heel:
K across 1st half of stitches (top of foot), then work heel on 2nd half of stitches as follows:

R1: K to last stitch, yarnover, slip the last stitch from the left needle to the right needle. Turn work.

R2: Slip the first stitch from the left needle to the right needle, and purl to the last stitch. Yarnover, slip last stitch. Turn.

R3: Slip the first stitch from left needle to the right one, knit to the last stitch before the slipped stitch. Wrap and turn.

R4: Slip the first stitch and purl across to the stitch before the slipped stitch. Wrap and turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 10 (12, 14) stitches left unwrapped in the middle of the heel.

R1: K across the unwrapped stitches to the first wrapped stitch. Pick up the wrap and knit it together with the stitch. Wrap the next stitch (it will now have two wraps) and turn.

R2: Slip the first, double-wrapped, stitch and purl to the first wrapped stitch on the other side. Pick up the wrap and purl it together with the stitch. Wrap the next stitch and turn.

R3: Slip the first, double-wrapped, stitch, and knit to the double wrapped stitch on the other side. Pick up both the wraps and knit them together with the stitch. Wrap the next stitch and turn.

R4: Slip the first, double-wrapped, stitch, and purl to the double wrapped stitch.
Pick up both the wraps and purl them together with the wrapped stitch. Wrap the next stitch and turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all stitches have been unwrapped and knit to the end of the heel stitches.

Resume knitting in the round, beginning with R2, but pick up stitches from the bar at either end of the heel, and knit them together with the first st of the foot to minimize the hole created from setting the heel.

Continue working cable pattern in the round until you've reached the length desired for your sock, ending with R4.

Cuff:

K4, M1. Purl into this new stitch, *k1, p1. Repeat from * across to last 4 stitches on top of foot, k4. M1, Purl into this new stitch, *k1, p1. Repeat from * to end of round.

Continue in rib pattern, cabling the 4 end stitches as you have been, until 11 more rounds have been completed (ending with R4 of cable pattern).

Bind off all stitches using the sewn bind off method.

Hi! I'm trying this pattern as my very first sock! Just wanted to clarify - when you say cast on 10 in figure 8, is that 10 total stitches (5 on each side of the needle) or 10 on each side of the needle? Also, when you give your stitch counts, is that total or on each side of the needle? Thank you in advance!

Stitch counts given are total stitch counts.

Best,

Nikki

I am sorry to bug you again but I'm on row 2 of the heel and am a little confused. Am I supposed to purl the stitch that would've been created from the previous row's yarn over? Because I'm finding that to be a little tricky. Or is that just a maneuver to get the yarn into the right place. Thank you!

Yup, you purl the yarnover--if you're having trouble, try purling through the back loop--just get that stitch onto your right hand needle by hook or by crook, and it will be fine.
